ICED WINDOWS, FROSTED VISION, revisited
To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake, it is necessary to stand out in the cold.
Aristotle
White sky and ground
blend into a seamless horizon of gray
where snow-encased branches rise
as part of both threat and beauty.
Darkness and slick roads threaten travelers.
Glistening ponds and crystal trees
tempt artists and treat the spirit.
I kick off my boots,
let them dry inside a warm house,
and allow my toes to find feeling again.
Then I embrace bitter and sweet
for as long as each experience lasts, in order to live
inside the fullness of each moment.

To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake it is necessary to stand out in the cold. Aristotle
The snow will melt before it touches the ground. One part of me circles inside the cold and another part has already melted on the road. I want to leap into a warmer day yet linger in the present. No moment is perfect.
My heart wants to take icy pain away from some people I know. Their burdens won’t melt on the road. And yet, I always hope that enough warmth will find them. Now, in each passing now…
Peanut Butter, an Old CD, and my Friend, Ann

Without friends no one would choose to live, though he had all other goods. (Aristotle)
Ann and I share peanut butter sandwiches and listen to music. We sing along and fake the lyrics. It doesn’t matter whether we know the words or not. The sky promises rain. Inside we celebrate sun. Ann couldn’t see blue if it did suddenly break through unexpectedly. My friend is blind. Her eyes don’t work; her heart-vision does.
She often takes an Access bus to visit a friend in a nursing home. It cheers him up.
“How long can you stay?” I ask.
“What do you need to do today?” she answers. “I don’t want to overstay my welcome.”
The kitchen floor needs a scrub. I have edits. Always. However, I suspect I need the presence of a friend. A shared awareness of a moment that exists now and won’t return.
Ann has the uncanny knack of knowing how I really feel. The last time we were together I’d been upset, and she sensed it. Today is better. We celebrate in simple ways. I could wear a shirt one tear away from the rag bag; she wouldn’t know, or care. She cherishes more lasting values. Who a person is, an ability to give, to care.
The television is off. I’ll face the world scene later. After I accept the fact that both good and evil exist.
Ann and I blast out the words we recognize in old songs and hum when the lyrics don’t get through to our hearing aids.
“I’ll be your friend forever,” she says.
Forever is more than I can grasp. A lot has happened since time began. However, Aristotle was onto something centuries ago. Friendship has tangible value.
May you always have friends you can trust.
When Sun, Moon, and Human Beings Align

The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal. (Aristotle)
Monday’s focus: the eclipse across the United States. Nature’s rare event preempts hate broadcasted in a continuous loop—at least for a while. The moment was so brief many of the clickable links have already been removed.
I had appointments during show time, so I look for photos taken by other people, extend that moment and revel in it.
The shadows. Conquering real-life human darkness remains.
Us and them.
Blame taken to blind extremes.
If taken literally, of course all lives matter. However, the notion bypasses struggle that doesn’t fit the whole. Equal as human beings? Yes, we are—in universal acceptance of that fact, no. The privileged don’t need to fight for privilege.
In several different groups, the same topic comes up, and I wonder if it is a divine accident. As friends, the people in these groups trust one another. We talk about both understanding and misunderstanding in the nitty-gritty of the everyday. The blatant and the subtle, the repercussions. The details of our sharing can’t be spread in a public blog. The common human threads can.
The moon and the sun aligned this week. May the people who rely on Mother Nature, eventually, join as family.
